Another very important difference between the "staged" versions of the CMMI and the CMM resides in the CMMI’s increased scope and larger set of discriminations. The CMMI consists of 25 process areas and 510628 practices (510 in the staged model and 628 in the continuous model), whereas the Software CMM consists of 18 key process areas and 316 practices . There are seven more process areas in the CMMI staged model than in the CMM model because the CMMI provides "more detailed coverage of the product life cycle" and because it incorporates several new application areas including software engineering, systems engineering, integrated product and process development, supplier sourcing, and acquisition .
