Based on Humphrey’s work, the SEI evolved a capability maturity model to articulate explicitly the relationships between specific software process practices and continuous quality improvement. First in a 1993 report written by Mark Paulk, et al titled The Capability Maturity Model for Software Version and Key Practices of the Capability Maturity Model, Version  and then in a 1995 book titled The Capability Maturity Model: Guidelines for Improving the Software Process , the CMM emerged both as a staged plan for reliable software development process improvement and an implied template for rigorous assessment.
